Diploma Programmes

The International School of Berne can be the pathway for your child to access universities around the world. ISBerne offers two diplomas, both granting access to various universities.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is a rigorous, internationally recognised Diploma, accepted at universities world-wide. In addition to the IB Diploma, ISBerne offers a fully accredited U.S. High School Diploma which, in combination with the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) qualifies for application to universities in the U.S.A.

Graduates of the IB Diploma Programme receive both diplomas, however, students may opt to study for the ISBerne Diploma only.

The IB Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP), is a two-year diploma programme open to students aged 16-19. Upon successful completion of the programme, students are awarded the prestigious IB Diploma.

The IBDP is structured to enable students to develop into well-rounded adults through integrative, challenging, internationally focussed courses. It provides excellent preparation for future studies and is recognised at universities worldwide.

Students study six subjects, three at higher level and three at standard level providing them with a broad, holistic education.

These include:

  • Languages: two
  • Individuals and Societies: one
  • Science: one
  • Mathematics: one
  • Arts: one

The real-life contexts of the Diploma Programme help students to further develop their academic skill set, preparing them for university courses, as well as their values and life skills.

The two-year Diploma Programme culminates in a two-week examination session at the end of the second year.

This Programme is based around the “Core” of:

Theory of Knowledge (TOK):

Students think about the nature of knowledge and reflect on the process of learning in all their subjects, looking for and understanding the connections between them.

Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS):

Allows students to find and follow their passions, helping them to maintain balance in their lives, care for others, develop their character and undertake challenging projects.

Extended Essay (EE):

Students undertake a piece of academic writing of up to 4000 words. The process will take them through a process called metacognition, where they will learn to understand how and why they make decisions during an academic piece of research.

These three core elements work together, the academic subjects, to help our students become capable, self-aware and international minded people with a strong sense of identity.

The ISBerne High School Diploma

ISBerne offers a fully accredited U.S. High School Diploma as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

The U.S. High School diploma qualifies graduates for U.S. Universities as well as some European higher education schools.

Less rigorous than the IB diploma, it is a welcome alternative for many of our students, particularly those planning to study in the U.S.A.

ISBerne is also an exam center for both the SAT and PSAT, so students planning to apply to universities in the U.S.A. may fulfil this application requirement at ISBerne.

ISBerne Online

We know that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to education. For those who can not attend our school or who desire a flexible schedule to accommodate other activities or needs, ISBerne Online is an excellent solution.

ISBerne Online is an affiliate distance-learning programme which is run separately from the ISBerne campus. Operated by iCademy Middle East using the K12 online curriculum for students in Middle and High School, successful completion of the programme results in the ISBerne High School Diploma, accredited by NEASC, and the option to participate in our on-campus graduation ceremony in June.

Upon completion of requirements, ISBerne graduates receive an ISBerne High School Diploma and, for students who chose the International Baccalaureate Programme, the prestigious IB Diploma (IBDP).
